L'idea di OpenStreetMap nasce nel 2004 dalla volontà di uno studente di rispondere alla eccessiva chiusura degli enti governativi in termini di disponibilità dei dati cartografici. Oggi il progetto conta più di 190.000 utenti iscritti e la comunità cresce ogni giorno di più. Grazie ai dati, raccolti dagli stessi utenti in maniera condivisa, è possibile utilizzare le mappe prodotte sui dati OpenStreetMap per arricchire un sito web, per popolare un geodatabase o per far funzionare un navigatore satellitare. In questo articolo vengono presentati i risultati e le prospettive a cinque anni di distanza dal lancio del progetto.
